Bombay Original London Dry Gin- A Review
She’s a good looking lady, Miss Bombay. Proud and tall, a beautiful label. Like many of us, she’s an English commodity, wrought in the clotheof a global empire that leaves a lot of meat on the bone. Probably why they drink Bombay Dry Gin. Gin stands out as the one liquor I’ve not had a bad night on, perhaps because when you’re on gin, the night feels as brilliant as day. The sketchiest situation feels quite contained and in your grasp. The most beautiful women are simply pretty. Because Bombay is carving the path through your time, defining what can and can’t be done and these are loose definitions.
NOTE: This is Bombay Original London Dry Gin, not the also world famous Bombay Sapphire, which is in it’s own right a phenomenal gin.
It’s a light, smooth gin, not as harsh as the lower shelf stuff and at this point I’ve learned to drink it straight. Don’t get me wrong, this pours beautifully in with a mixer, I’m sure you could manufacture a nice gin and tonic from it, but unlike other gins I encounter, this one is perfectly fine on it’s own too. Subtlety is one of the biggest assets to a nice gin and even getting to the point you can understand and detect it is difficult because…you have to drink a lot of straight gin and that’s not something other people do in my experience. However, if you can climb that glacier of cool bitterness, you’ll learn to taste things you’d never think you would enjoy.
This Gin has 8 ingredients infused into it to give it’s distinct smooth flavor-Juniper Berries, Coriander Seeds,Licorice Root,Almonds,Lemon Peel,Cassia Bark, Orris Root,Angelica Root.
Pricewise, this is a very reasonable premium spirit. I got 750 ml bottle for $22 in Louisiana (which is a wonderful place to buy alchohol by the way) and I still have some, but have drank much of it. I would buy more. I will. I’m not much of a spirit drinker, very much a beer guy. But this is something different. In college I was a Seagrams man because it was cheap, but it just was not the same beast as this. And honestly for the relatively scant price difference, it’s worth it to just buy a nice quality gin. (Beefeater and Seersucker are also great brands for this.)
Aesthetically, the label and bottle shape are iconic and classy in the gin world. You can tell a bottle of Bombay from a distance, it’s one of those liquors. It looks as good on the shelf as it’s contents do in your cup.
So, that’s it for this wonderful rant about gin. Thank you for reading- and I recommend picking up a bottle soon. Your friends will think you’re crazy, but in a cool way.
